Fisher-Information-Based Sensor Placement for Structural Digital Twins: Analytic Results and Benchmarks
Published in arXiv preprint, 2026
We develop a Fisher-information-based framework for optimal sensor placement in structural digital twins. The approach leverages adjoint-based finite element solvers and matrix-free operator formulations for efficient computation of the Fisher information matrix. We derive analytic results for D-optimal sensor configurations — including uniform spacing in a 1D structural model — and validate the framework through benchmarks.
